Pilot celebrated its 80th Anniversary in 1998. In order to commemorate this important anniversary, Pilot has produced the “ShiSen” black & red urushi (as well as the legendary “Miyabi” set: Bugaku (LE68) 舞樂, Soushi-e (LE65) 草紙 and Kaiawase (LE55) 貝合せ). This Limited Edition Red (Vermillion) Urushi fountain pen has a decorative cap band depicting the 4 famous Heavenly Animals, the Dragon, Phoenix, Tiger and the XuanWu (kind of Tortoise). The band is decorated with the shijin (four gods) done in togidashi maki-e. The Japanese imported the shijin from China. Each mythological creature guards a direction of the compass and is also associated with a season. They are respectively, Shujaku, the red phoenix of the south (summer), Byakko, the white tiger of the west (autumn), Genbu, the black tortoise of the north (winter) and and Seiryu, the blue/green dragon of the east (spring). Wonderfully balanced and of ideal size, this understated pen is destined for a prominent place on a discerning collector’s top shelf.
The pen came with all original boxes, papers and packaging: large, gorgeous high quality black lacquer box (with “ShiSen” and “Kokko Kai” written on the bottom left of the lacquer box), outer gold dust box, writing paper, and an 80th anniversary ink bottle (still sealed).
This is a full sized (5 7/8″ capped) pen, with a superior cartridge – converter (included) filling system.
