Hommage à Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie is one of the finest examples of the great American success story. The son of a poor Scottish immigrant, he became a millionaire steel magnate through a combination of luck, skill and hard work. Despite his fabulous wealth, his whole life was influenced by the privations of a childhood spent in poverty. Andrew Carnegie was firmly convinced that wealthy people were morally obliged to dedicate themselves to charitable works. So, he spent 350 million dollars – almost his whole fortune – on cultural foundations, public libraries and cultural programmes.
