The Emperor Collection is Namiki’s highest ranking series.
An outstanding pen of impressive size and appearance, decorated in maki-e with raden highlights. As noted by Namiki, the Birds in Flight design is executed in the charcoal burnished Togadashi-maki-e technique, a method in which gilded patterns are dried, recoated with urushi, and finally burnished to a high sheen using charcoal. This style of Maki-e dates to the 7th century. The spreading of gold dust on a precise area and to a desired density is a skill which requires great expertise and experience. The birds in flight lacquer pen is traditional and gorgeous lacquer work arranged with the kisshou (happiness) design on the surface coated with nashiji. No limitation stated, although Namiki describes the pen as having “very limited production.” Medium 18K mono-tone gold Medium (M) nib, large #50 size. This pen employs an eyedropper filling system.
A traditional oriental wood gift box with outer box, paper and pipette completes the stunning presentation. Uncommon Namiki pen from early 90s.
